Cornwall & West Devon Round 3

Devonport pushed St.Austell all the way in the fight to take top spot in the third and final round of the Cornwall & West Devon league. Penzance were the hosts with Tavistock completing the opposition. Devonport again featured strongly in the relays with seven of Devonport’s fourteen wins coming from these events. The competition began brightly with the girls 4 x 50m freestyle cannon relay coming in first, Kirsty Dinham, Victoria Philpot, Sam Wilkes and Louise Brightwell.

Kirsty and Victoria continued their winning form taking the 11 and under 50m breaststroke and 13 and under 50m freestyle respectively. Victoria was again successful as part of the 13 and under 4 x 50m medley team alongside Rebecca Ward, Rachel Ward and Laura Moreno-Chamorro. Abbey Ward was in top form in the girls 15 and under 100m butterfly. Both girls and boys 15 and under 4 x 50m freestyle relay teams were convincing taking these events in some style, Sam Wilkes, Hannah Partridge, Abby McBeath, Jade Leeke and the boys team consisting of Tom Morse, Peter Gates, Jordan Nicholson and Nat Chartres.

Chris Philpot was in convincing form taking the 15 and under 100m backstroke,(1:12:45).Sam Wilkes was also a winner to take the 15 and under 100m freestyle,(1:10:26). Jade Leeke was also in top spot for the open 100m breaststroke. Rebecca Ward was in first place to take the 13 and under 50m backstroke, (38:45).

As the competition reached it’s conclusion Devonport took three of the remaining seven events. Again the girls 13 and under freestyle relay team won with  Victoria Philpot, Rebecca Ward, Kirsty Dinham and Laura Moreno-Chamorro. The girls 15 and under medley team were again unbeaten to take top spot. The boys 15 and under medley team of Peter Gates, Ryan Moreno-Chamorro, Danny Banks and Nat Chartres matched the girls winning formula.

The final points tally saw Tavistock in 4th with 112 points, home team Penzance were 3rd with 121 points, Devonport had taken the runners up spot with 127 points and St.Austell winners with 142 points.

Some tenacious swimming had contributed to a successful evening for Devonport. Thanks to Terry Mansell and to our officials and poolside helpers for their commitment to our club.
