Speedo round 1- Exeter

Devonport headed to Exeter for the first round of the Speedo League; with some swimmers absent from the squad we had a tough task ahead. Some close finishing led to Devonport taking numerous top three places, opposition came from Weymouth, Carn Brea, Gillingham, Bodmin and Salisbury.

Tom Mermagen was in good form taking the 15 and under 100m butterfly (1.08.98.) Jess Fennell was edged into second for the same event (1.16.95.) Steve Clench swam a strong open 100m breastroke to also be in second place (1.14.20.) This position was matched by Angus Robertson in the 11 and under 50m breastroke (50.22.)  Sam Bowden continually improving was impressive taking second place in the 13 and under 50m freestyle (31.67.) As the closing relays took place the boys 15 and under medley team of Peter Gates, Ryan Moreno-Chamorro, Tom Mermagen and Nat Chartres also had a close second (2.10.67.)

After fifty events, Devonport had 143 points and finished 5th, Gillingham finished 6th with 80 points, winners were Bodmin 229 points, followed by Carn Brea 211 points, Salisbury followed with 196 points and Weymouth 3rd with 173 points.

The second round draw will take place next week.
