Devonport had another very tough draw at Bodmin on Saturday 10th November. However, the swimmers performances were full of grit and determination and they were amongst the top three places on many occasions. Opposition came from Newquay, Plymouth Leander B, Ilfracombe and Carn Brea, all of whom were seeded above Devonport. Jon Hall was in second place for the 11 and under 50m backstroke (40.86).
Sinead Davies was again in impressive form taking second place for the 13 and under breaststroke (41.36).
The 15 and under 100m backstroke placed Chris Philpot second (1.10.16).Tom Mermagen matched this performance in the 15 and under 100m butterfly (1.09.11).
At the halfway stage, Devonport were 4th with 59 points, Carn Brea third with 70 points, Newquay second with 79 points and Plymouth Leander ahead with 107 points.
Sam Bowden took a couple of excellent second places in the 50m butterfly (35.41) and 50m freestyle (30.51).Jess Fennell had a great evening taking second place for the 15 and under 100m freestyle (1.04.76), matched by Nat Chartres in the same event (1.00.45).
Ryan Moreno-Chamorro swam a thrilling race to clinch second place for the 100m breaststroke (1.23.16).Devonport supporters were firmly behind the closing relays where Peter Gates, Ryan Moreno-Chamorro, Tom Mermagen and Nat Chartres again took a tight second place.
A mention must go to Steve Clench for his outstanding effort in the Open 100m butterfly where despite a torn muscle; he managed to complete the race, before being helped from the pool. His courage and determination was an inspiration to the rest of the team. Thanks to the pool staff and Tony Davies for their help on this occasion. Pool staff commented on the excellent behaviour and co-operation of the Devonport swimmers during this time.As the gala concluded, Ilfracombe were 5th with 92 points, Devonport Royal 4th with 126 points, Newquay claimed third with 142 points, Carn Brea runners up with 155 points and Plymouth Leander finished in top spot with 190 points.
